Telehandler Pre-Use Visual Inspection Checklist (pad of 30)
Telehandlers used must be carefully selected, maintained and operated by trained drivers. They are one of the most versatile pieces of construction site equipment with the capacity and reach to carry out many of the tasks traditionally undertaken by mobile and tower cranes. Unfortunately the very versatility that makes them so useful also provides scope for unsafe use.
The telehandler inspection pad helps businesses perform their pre-use or daily safety inspections. The checklist is designed to help you comply with your duty of care under HSE guidance, LOLER and PUWER. The duplicate checklist design creates two signed copies of each inspection and incorporates a PASS/FAIL notice. Each pad has 30 checklists and is used in tandem with a hi-vis display wallet

How to use
Before every shift, the operator of the telehandler can simply work down the inspection checklist, checking the safety of each component in turn. Once the inspection is complete, assuming safety has been established, the green PASS inspection certificate can be placed inside a safety status indicator on the telehandler ensuring that everyone can clearly see that the telehandler is safe for use. Failing telehandlers can be similarly identified by a red FAIL certificate and reported for maintenance. The duplicate copy of the certificate remains inside the inspection pad and can be used as evidence of inspections should you ever need to produce this for the HSE or other official parties.

FAQs
How often should Telehandlers by inspected?
A programme of daily visual checks, regular inspections and servicing schedules should be established in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the risks associated with each vehicle.
Drivers should be encouraged to report defects or problems. Reported problems should be put right quickly and the excavator taken out of service if the item is safety critical.
Are telehandlers covered by LOLER?
The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) require that all lifting equipment is thoroughly examined by a competent person at specified intervals. In the case of a telehandler, it should be thoroughly examined:
- When the telehandler is put into service for the first time
- At regular intervals of:- o a period not exceeding 12 months if the telehandler is only used for lifting goods or a period not exceeding 6 months if the telehandler is used for lifting persons
- After any major alteration or damage
Do Pallet trucks need to be inspected under PUWER
Yes, whilst hand pallet trucks may not fall under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) they are covered by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998). PUWER states that you should make sure equipment is suitable for use in the purpose and conditions in which you’re using it, that it’s maintained in a safe condition, and that it’s inspected by a competent person to make sure that it continues to be safe to use. You also need to keep proper records of your inspections.
